Thayer's Greek Lexicon

βοάω, βόω; (imperfect ἐβόων, Act 21:34 Rec.); 1 aorist ἐβόησα; (βοή); from Homer down; in the Sept. mostly for ÷ÈøÈà, æÈòÇ÷, öÈòÇ÷, to cry aloud, shout (Latinboo);

1. to raise a cry: of joy, Gal 4:27 (from Isa 54:1); of pain, Mat 27:46 L marginal reading Tr WH; Act 8:7.

2. to cry i. e. speak with a high, strong voice: Mat 3:3, Mar 1:3, Luk 3:4, Joh 1:23 (all from Isa 40:3); Mar 15:34; Luk 9:38 (R G ἀναβοάω); (Luk 18:38); Act 17:6; Act 21:34 Rec.; (R G ἐπιβοάω).

3. πρός τινα to cry to one for help, implore his aid: Luk 18:7 (T Tr WH αὐτῷ; cf. Winer’s Grammar, 212 (199)) (1Sa 7:8; 1Ch 5:20; Hos 7:14, etc. for àÆì æÈòÇ÷). (Compare: ἀναβοάω, ἐπιβοάω.) [SYNONYMS: βοάω, καλέω, κράζω, κραυγάζω: It is not uninstructive to notice that ill classic usage καλεῖν denotes ’to cry out’ for a purpose, to call; βοᾶν to cry out as a manifestation of feeling; κράζειν to cry out harshly, often of an inarticulate and brutish sound; thus καλεῖν suggests intelligence; βοᾶν sensibilities; κράζειν instincts; hence, βοᾶν especially a cry for help. κραυγάζειν, intensive of κράζω, denotes to cry coarsely, in contempt, etc. Cf. Schmidt, chapter 3.]
