ἀρχισυνάγωγος, ἀρχισυναγώγου, ὁ (συναγωγή), ruler of a synagogue, äÇëÀÌðÆñÆú øÉàùÑ: Mark 5:22, 35f, 38; Luk 8:49; Luk 13:14; Act 13:15; Act 18:8; Act 18:17. It was his duty to select the readers or teachers in the synagogue, to examine the discourses of the public speakers, and to see that all things were done with decency and in accordance with ancestral usage; (cf. Alex.’s Kitto under the word Synagogue). (Not found in secular writings; (yet Schrer (Theol. Literatur-Zeit., 1878, p. 5) refers to Corp. Inscriptions Grace. no 2007 f.
