ὑμνέω, ύ῾μνω: imperfect ὕμνουν; future ὑμνήσω; 1 aorist participle ὑμνησας; (ὕμνος); from Hesiod down; the Sept. often for äÄìÅÌì, äåãÈä, äÅùÄÑéø, æÄîÅÌø;
1. transitive, to sing the praise of; sing hymns to: τινα, Act 16:25; Heb 2:12.
2. intransitive, to sing a hymn, to sing: Mat 26:30; Mar 14:26 (in both passages of the singing of the paschal hymns; these were Psa 113:1-9; Psa 114:1-8; Psa 115:1-18; Psa 116:1-19; Psa 117:1-2; Psa 118:1-29 and Psa 136:1-26, which the Jews call the ’great Hallel’ (but see Ginsburg in Kitto under the word Hallel; Edersheim, The Temple etc., p. 191f; Buxtorf (edited by Fischer), p. 314f)); Psalm 64:13 (); 1Ma 13:47.
