πρεσβύτης, πρεσβύτου, ὁ (πρέσβυς (see πρεσβεύω)), an old man, an aged man: Luk 1:18; Tit 2:2; Phm 1:9 (here many (cf. R. V. marginal reading) regard the word as a substitute for πρεσβευτής, ambassador; see Lightfoots Commentary at the passage; WH’s Appendix, at the passage; and add to the examples of the interchange πρεσβευτεροις in Wood, Discoveries at Ephesus, Appendix, Inscriptions from the Great Theatre, p. 24 (col. 5, 50:72)).
