λυτρόω, λύτρῳ: passive, 1 aorist ἐλυτρωθην; middle, present infinitive λυτροῦσθαι; 1 aorist subjunctive 3 person singular λυτρώσηται; (λύτρον, which see); the Sept. often for âÈÌàÇì and ôÈÌãÈä;
1. to release on receipt of ransom: Plato, Theact., p. 165 e.; Diodorus 19, 73; the Sept., Num 18:15; Num 18:17.
2. to redeem, liberate by payment of ransom ((Demosthenes, others)), generally expressed by the middle; universally, to liberate: τινα ἀργυρίῳ, and likewise ἐκ with the genitive of the thing; passive ἐκ τῆς ματαίας ἀναστροφῆς, 1Pe 1:18; middle "to cause to be released to oneself (cf. Winers Grammar, 254 (238)) by payment of the ransom, i. e. to redeem; universally, to deliver": in the Jewish theocratic sense, τόν Ἰσραήλ, viz. from evils of every kind, external and internal, Luk 24:21; ἀπό πάσης ἀνομίας, Tit 2:14 (cf. Winer’s Grammar, § 30, 6 a.); τινα ἐκ, spoken of God, Deu 13:5; 2Sa 7:23; Hos 13:14.
