λουτρόν, λουτροῦ, τό (λούω), from Homer down (who uses λοετρόν, from the uncontracted form λοέω), a bathing, bath, i. e. as well the act of bathing (a sense disputed by some (cf. Ellicott on Eph 5:26)), as the place; used in the N. T. and in ecclesiastical writings of baptism (for examples see Sophocles’ Lexicon, under the word): with τοῦ ὕδατος added, Eph 5:26; τῆς παλιγγενεσίας, Tit 3:5.
