1. properly: of an infant, followed by ἐν with the dative of place, Luk 2:12 (Tdf. omits κείμενον),16; of one buried: ὅπου or οὗ, Mat 28:6; Luk 23:53; Joh 11:41 Rec.; ; of things that quietly cover some spot, Luk 24:12 (R G L brackets); Joh 20:5-7; Joh 21:9; with ἐπί τί added, 2Co 3:15; ἐπάνω τίνος (of a city situated on a hill), Mat 5:14; also of things put or set in any place, in reference to which we often use to stand: thus of vessels, Joh 2:6; Joh 19:29 (χύτρας κειμενας, Xenophon, oec. 8, 19); of a throne, Rev 4:2 (Jer 24:1; Homer, Iliad 2, 777; Odyssey 17, 331); κεῖσθαι πρός τί, to be brought near to a thing (see πρός, I. 2 a.), Mat 3:10; Luk 3:9; absolutely, of the site of a city, τετραγονος κεῖται, Rev 21:16; of grain and other things laid up, gathered together, Luk 12:19; of a foundation, 1Co 3:11.
2. metaphorically,
a. to be (by God’s intent) set, i. e. destined, appointed: followed by εἰς with the accusative indicating the purpose, Luk 2:34; Php 1:17 (16); 1Th 3:3.
b. as very often in secular authors (cf. Passow, under the word, p. 1694b; (Liddell and Scott, under the word, IV. 2)), of laws, to be made, laid down: τίνι, 1Ti 1:9.
c. ὁ κόσμος ὅλος ἐν τῷ πονηρῷ κεῖται, lies in the power of the evil one, i. e. is held in subjection by the devil, 1Jn 5:19. (Compare: ἀνάκειμαι, συνανάκειμαι, ἀντίκειμαι, ἀπόκειμαι, ἐπίκειμαι, κατάκειμαι, παράκειμαι, περίκειμαι, πρόκειμαι.)
