ἐπιγραφή, ἐπιγραφης, ἡ (ἐπιγράφω), an inscription, title: in the N. T. of an inscription in black letters upon a whitened tablet (B. D. under the word ), Luk 23:38; with the genitive τῆς αἰτίας, i. e. of the accusation, Mar 15:26 (γράμματα τήν αἰτίαν τῆς θανατώσεως αὐτοῦ δηλουντα, Dio Cassius, 54, 3; cf. Sueton. Calig. 32; Domit. 10); of the inscription on a coin: Mat 22:20; Mar 12:16; Luk 20:24. (From Thucydides down.)
