Σαλήμ, ἡ (Heb. ùÈÑìÅí), Salem: Heb 7:1 f; cf. Gen 14:18, which some (as Gesenius, Winer, Hitzig, Knobel, Delitzsch) think is the ancient name of the city of Jerusalem, appealing to the words of Psa 76:3 ñËëÌå áÀÌùÈÑìÅí åÇéÀäÄé, and Josephus, Antiquities 1, 10, 2 τήν μέντοι Σολυμα ὕστερον ἐκάλεσαν Ἱεροσόλυμα; cf. b. j. 6, 10. But more correctly (yet cf. B. D. under the word , and under the word under the end) others (as Rosenmüller, Bleek, Tuch, Roediger in Gesenius Thesaurus under the word, p. 1422, Dillmann), relying on the testimony of Jerome ((Ep. ad Evangelum § 7 i. e.) Epistle 73 in Vallarsi’s edition of his works, i., p. 446), hold that it is the same as Σαλείμ (which see). For the ancient name of Jerusalem was ιΐαεΜρ (Jdg 19:10; 1Ch 11:4; (cf. B. D. American edition, under the word )), and the form of the name in Psa 76:3 (where the Sept. εἰρήνη) is to be regarded as poetic, signifying ’safe.’
