II. מָן in Exod 16:15 (with reference to the manna) מַההֿוּא וַיּאֹמְרוּ אִישׁ אֶלאָֿחִיו מָן הוּא כִּי לֹא יָָֽדְעוּ, most probably 'What is it?' the question being intended as a popular etymology of מָן 'manna,' based upon the late Aramaic [untranscribed source text 3013] What ? (man is 'Who?' in Arabic, Aramaic מַן [untranscribed source text 3014]), Mandaean (מאן), Ethiopic ( manu ), 'What?' in these dialects being [untranscribed source text 3015] מָה [untranscribed source text 3016] מָא (Ethiopic ment ); מָן in the sense of 'What?' must correspond to the later Syriac [untranscribed source text 3017] contracted from [untranscribed source text 3018] ᵑ7 מָדֵין § 68 WSG 125).
