Before you interpret
Interpreter Posture and Readiness
The student is part of the study. Pride, haste, fear, tradition, experience, and favourite doctrines can distort interpretation. This checklist prepares the heart and mind before serious work.
Readiness checklist
- Pray for illumination, humility, and obedience.
- Receive Scripture with reverence rather than as material to control.
- Confess bias, denominational reflexes, personal experience filters, and favourite doctrines.
- Be intellectually honest: label uncertainty and do not make the text say more than it says.
- Meditate on the passage, not only on tools about the passage.
- Use a sound mind: avoid extremes, haste, speculation, and emotional overreach.
- Accept correction from the wider believing community while testing all claims by Scripture.
Plain-English safeguards
Bias
A leaning you bring to the text before reading it. Everyone has biases; the honest student tries to recognise them.
Intellectual honesty
Saying only what the evidence supports and admitting when you are uncertain.
