Description

Vicarious atonement is the biblical and theological teaching that Jesus Christ offered Himself on behalf of sinful people, accomplishing through His death what they could not accomplish for themselves. In this sense, His death was not merely an example of love or faithfulness, but a saving act in which He bore the consequences of sin so that those who believe might receive forgiveness, peace with God, and new covenant blessing. Conservative evangelical usage commonly overlaps with substitutionary atonement, especially the truth that Christ died “for us” and “for our sins.” While orthodox Christians may differ on how best to relate the various biblical themes of sacrifice, ransom, victory, reconciliation, and substitution, the safest conclusion is that Scripture presents Christ’s death as truly representative and saving on behalf of sinners.
