Description

The Transfiguration is the Gospel event in which Jesus was visibly manifested in radiant glory before Peter, James, and John on a mountain (Matt. 17; Mark 9; Luke 9). In that moment, His face and clothing were changed in appearance, Moses and Elijah appeared speaking with Him, and the Father declared, “This is my beloved Son,” directing the disciples to listen to Him. Conservative Christian interpretation understands this not as a change in Jesus’ nature, but as a temporary unveiling of His divine majesty joined to His true humanity. The event confirms Jesus’ identity as the Son of God, highlights His superiority and fulfillment in relation to the Law and the Prophets, and prepares the disciples for the path of His coming suffering, resurrection, and future kingdom glory.
