Do not flatten this passage into a generic anti-materialism slogan or a direct promise that every modern tragedy is a specific punishment for sin. Its exile warning belongs to Judah under the Mosaic covenant. Also avoid turning the lament into permission for personal vengeance; the appeal for judgment on the nations is a covenant lawsuit entrusted to God, not a template for hostile Christian speech.
