The conspirators exploit both court politics and royal vanity. Their proposal is framed as a flattering administrative measure, but it is actually a religious test: for thirty days all petitions must be directed to the king alone. The claim that the law of the Medes and Persians cannot be changed serves the plot by giving the decree an air of finality, but the story’s deeper point is that no human law can finally constrain the God of Daniel. The king is trapped by his own edict and by the manipulative logic of his officials.

Daniel’s response in verse 10 is the decisive act of the narrative.
