At the same time, the accumulation of horses and chariots stands in tension with Deuteronomy’s warning that the king must not multiply horses and turn to Egypt for them. The Gibeon and Jerusalem details should be read in relation to the tabernacle, the ark, and the coming temple, not as detachable symbols for private spirituality.
