The initial census in verses 3–5 lists 38,000 Levites and assigns them four broad tasks: 24,000 to oversee the work of the Lord’s temple, 6,000 as officers and judges, 4,000 as gatekeepers, and 4,000 as musicians. The distribution shows that Levitical service was not limited to sacrifice; it included administration, security, teaching/judging, and liturgical praise.
