122:1 I was glad because they said to me, “We will go to the Lord’s temple.” 122:2 Our feet are standing inside your gates, O Jerusalem. 122:3 Jerusalem is a city designed to accommodate an assembly. 122:4 The tribes go up there, the tribes of the Lord, where it is required that Israel give thanks to the name of the Lord. 122:5 Indeed, the leaders sit there on thrones and make legal decisions, on the thrones of the house of David. 122:6 Pray for the peace of Jerusalem! May those who love her prosper! 122:7 May there be peace inside your defenses, and prosperity inside your fortresses! 122:8 For the sake of my brothers and my neighbors I will say, “May there be peace in you!” 122:9 For the sake of the temple of the Lord our God I will pray for you to prosper. Simple Summary
Psalm 122 is a song of gladness for going up to Jerusalem to worship the Lord. It then calls God’s people to pray for the peace and welfare of the city where the tribes gather, justice is given, and the Lord’s temple stands.
What This Passage Means
The psalm begins with joy at the invitation to go to the Lord’s temple. The speaker is glad to join the pilgrimage. Then the feet of the worshipers stand inside Jerusalem’s gates.
Jerusalem is described as a city fit for people to gather together. The tribes go up there, the tribes of the Lord, to give thanks to his name. The city is also the place where leaders sit on thrones and make legal decisions from the house of David. So worship and righteous rule belong together.
The psalm then turns into prayer. God’s people are told to pray for the peace of Jerusalem. Those who love her should seek her good. The prayer asks for peace inside her walls and prosperity inside her fortresses. The writer says he will pray for Jerusalem because of his brothers and neighbors, and because of the temple of the Lord our God.

How This Fits in God’s Plan
Psalm 122 stands in Israel’s covenant life, where the Lord chose Jerusalem as the place of worship and the house of David as the seat of rule. It points to God’s purpose of giving his people peace, unity, and ordered worship under his presence. In the wider Bible story, the longing for Jerusalem’s peace fits the hope that God will dwell with his people in righteousness and peace.
Simple Application
Believers should value gathered worship, pray for the welfare of God’s people, and ask God to give peace, unity, and justice among his people. This psalm should be read in its historical setting, with care for Jerusalem’s role in God’s covenant history.
