Simple Bible Commentary

God’s steadfast love is greater than human evil

Psalms — Psalm 36 PSA_036

NET Bible Text

36:1 An evil man is rebellious to the core. He does not fear God, 36:2 for he is too proud to recognize and give up his sin. 36:3 The words he speaks are sinful and deceitful; he does not care about doing what is wise and right. 36:4 He plans ways to sin while he lies in bed; he is committed to a sinful lifestyle; he does not reject what is evil. 36:5 O Lord, your loyal love reaches to the sky; your faithfulness to the clouds. 36:6 Your justice is like the highest mountains, your fairness like the deepest sea; you preserve mankind and the animal kingdom. 36:7 How precious is your loyal love, O God! The human race finds shelter under your wings. 36:8 They are filled with food from your house, and you allow them to drink from the river of your delicacies. 36:9 For you are the one who gives and sustains life. 36:10 Extend your loyal love to your faithful followers, and vindicate the morally upright! 36:11 Do not let arrogant men overtake me, or let evil men make me homeless! 36:12 I can see the evildoers! They have fallen! They have been knocked down and are unable to get up! Psalm 37 By David.

Simple Summary

Psalm 36 contrasts the corruption of the wicked with the greatness of God. The wicked do not fear God. They are proud, deceitful, and committed to evil. But the Lord’s loyal love, faithfulness, righteousness, and justice are vast. He shelters, feeds, and preserves life. So the faithful ask him for continued love, protection, and vindication, trusting that evildoers will fall.

What This Passage Means

This psalm begins with a hard picture of the wicked. Sin is not just an act here. It is deep in the heart. The wicked do not fear God. Pride keeps them from seeing their sin. Their words are deceitful. They even plan evil when they lie in bed. This is settled rebellion, not a small failure.

Then the psalm turns to God. His loyal love reaches to the heavens. His faithfulness is great. His righteousness and justice are firm and wide, like mountains and sea. He also preserves both people and animals. God is not only holy. He is generous and life-giving.

The psalmist says God’s loyal love is precious. Under God’s wings there is shelter. In his house there is food and drink in abundance. Life itself comes from him, and life continues by his care.

So the psalm ends with prayer. The faithful ask God to keep showing loyal love, to vindicate the upright, and to protect them from arrogant and evil men. The closing words express confidence that the wicked will fall and not rise again. The psalm teaches that judgment belongs to God, and the faithful must rest in his justice and goodness.

How This Fits in God’s Plan

Psalm 36 belongs to Israel’s worship under the Mosaic covenant. It shows that God’s people live by his steadfast love while facing wicked opposition. The psalm does not point to a direct messianic prophecy, but in the larger Bible its themes of refuge, justice, and saving mercy are fulfilled and clarified in Christ.

Simple Application

Do not excuse sin in your heart. Ask God to show you what is evil before it hardens you. Measure your life by God’s character, not by the short success of the wicked. Pray for God’s protection, justice, and mercy. Rest in the truth that he sees, he rules, and he will bring down evil in his time.
