NET Bible Text
49:29 Then he instructed them, “I am about to go to my people. Bury me with my fathers in the cave in the field of Ephron the Hittite. 49:30 It is the cave in the field of Machpelah, near Mamre in the land of Canaan, which Abraham bought for a burial plot from Ephron the Hittite. 49:31 There they buried Abraham and his wife Sarah; there they buried Isaac and his wife Rebekah; and there I buried Leah. 49:32 The field and the cave in it were acquired from the sons of Heth.” 49:33 When Jacob finished giving these instructions to his sons, he pulled his feet up onto the bed, breathed his last breath, and went to his people. 50:1 Then Joseph hugged his father’s face. He wept over him and kissed him. 50:2 Joseph instructed the physicians in his service to embalm his father, so the physicians embalmed Israel. 50:3 They took forty days, for that is the full time needed for embalming. The Egyptians mourned for him seventy days. 50:4 When the days of mourning had passed, Joseph said to Pharaoh’s royal court, “If I have found favor in your sight, please say to Pharaoh, 50:5 ‘My father made me swear an oath. He said, “I am about to die. Bury me in my tomb that I dug for myself there in the land of Canaan.” Now let me go and bury my father; then I will return.’” 50:6 So Pharaoh said, “Go and bury your father, just as he made you swear to do.” 50:7 So Joseph went up to bury his father; all Pharaoh’s officials went with him – the senior courtiers of his household, all the senior officials of the land of Egypt, 50:8 all Joseph’s household, his brothers, and his father’s household. But they left their little children and their flocks and herds in the land of Goshen. 50:9 Chariots and horsemen also went up with him, so it was a very large entourage. 50:10 When they came to the threshing floor of Atad on the other side of the Jordan, they mourned there with very great and bitter sorrow. There Joseph observed a seven day period of mourning for his father. 50:11 When the Canaanites who lived in the land saw them mourning at the threshing floor of Atad, they said, “This is a very sad occasion for the Egyptians.” That is why its name was called Abel Mizraim, which is beyond the Jordan. 50:12 So the sons of Jacob did for him just as he had instructed them. 50:13 His sons carried him to the land of Canaan and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah, near Mamre. This is the field Abraham purchased as a burial plot from Ephron the Hittite. 50:14 After he buried his father, Joseph returned to Egypt, along with his brothers and all who had accompanied him to bury his father.

Simple Summary
Jacob dies after giving clear instructions to be buried with his fathers in Canaan. Joseph mourns him, keeps the oath, and leads a large funeral procession to Machpelah. The family buries Jacob there, then returns to Egypt.
What This Passage Means
Jacob’s death is recorded in a calm and solemn way. He had already told his sons where he was to be buried. He wanted to rest in the cave at Machpelah in the land of Canaan, where Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Rebekah, and Leah were buried. This was not a small detail. It showed that Jacob still trusted God’s promise about the land.
After Jacob dies, Joseph shows deep grief. He weeps, kisses his father, and has him embalmed in the Egyptian way. The mourning lasts many days. This fits Joseph’s high place in Egypt and shows the honor given to Jacob.
Joseph then asks Pharaoh’s court for permission to bury his father in Canaan. Pharaoh agrees. A large group goes with Joseph: officials, family members, chariots, and horsemen. They mourn with great sorrow on the way. The people of the land even notice how heavy the mourning is.
At last, Jacob is buried exactly as he had commanded. Joseph then returns to Egypt with his brothers and the others. The passage ends by showing faithful obedience, family honor, and hope tied to God’s promise, not to Egypt.
Important Truths
- Jacob gave careful instructions to be buried in the family tomb at Machpelah in Canaan.
- Jacob’s death is described as real death, and he is said to be gathered to his people.
- Joseph grieved deeply for his father.
- Joseph had Jacob embalmed according to Egyptian custom.
- Pharaoh allowed Joseph to bury his father in Canaan.
- Jacob was buried in the cave Abraham had bought.
- The family returned to Egypt after the burial.
Warnings, Promises, or Commands
- Warning: Do not treat Egypt as the family’s true inheritance; the promised land remained central.
- Promise: God’s covenant promise to Abraham’s family still stood, even after Jacob’s death.
- Command: Jacob’s sons were to bury him where he had instructed.
- Command: Joseph kept the oath and returned after the burial.
- Obligation: Honor for parents and faithful burial are shown as serious duties.
How This Fits in God’s Plan
This burial keeps the line of promise moving from Abraham to Isaac to Jacob. The family lives in Egypt for a time, but the burial in Canaan shows that God’s promise about the land still matters. Jacob dies before receiving it fully, yet he dies in faith, looking to what God had said.
Simple Application
Believers should trust God’s word even when they die without seeing all that He promised. Family duties, vows, and honoring parents matter. The passage also warns us not to make our present situation our final hope. Like Jacob, we should look to God’s promise more than to earthly comfort or status.
