NET Bible Text
12:9 Not only was the Teacher wise, but he also taught knowledge to the people; he carefully evaluated and arranged many proverbs. 12:10 The Teacher sought to find delightful words, and to write accurately truthful sayings. 12:11 The words of the sages are like prods, and the collected sayings are like firmly fixed nails; they are given by one shepherd. Concluding Exhortation: Fear God and Obey His Commands! 12:12 Be warned, my son, of anything in addition to them. There is no end to the making of many books, and much study is exhausting to the body. 12:13 Having heard everything, I have reached this conclusion: Fear God and keep his commandments, because this is the whole duty of man. 12:14 For God will evaluate every deed, including every secret thing, whether good or evil.

What This Passage Means
This closing section says the Teacher was wise and taught knowledge to the people. He chose fitting words and wrote true sayings. The wise words are like prods and like nails: they push people to act and they hold life steady. The warning against adding more shows that endless human books and study cannot replace God’s own wisdom. The final conclusion of the book is simple and strong: fear God and keep his commandments. This is the proper response for human beings before their Creator. The reason is that God will bring every deed into judgment, including secret things, whether good or evil.

How This Fits in God’s Plan
This passage closes Ecclesiastes by bringing the reader back to a basic covenant truth: life is lived before God, and all people must answer to him. It does not add a new promise or institution. It restates the call to reverent obedience under God’s searching judgment.
