"simple_summary": "God gave Israel one yearly day of atonement. On that day the high priest entered the holy place with blood and incense, made atonement for himself, the priests, the sanctuary, and the people, and one goat carried Israel’s sins away into the wilderness. The day showed that God is holy, sin is serious, and access to him must be on his terms.",
"simple_explanation": "Leviticus 16 answers a hard question: how can a holy God continue to dwell among a sinful people? After the death of Aaron’s sons, the Lord warned that Aaron could not enter the Most Holy Place whenever he wished. He could come only in the way God commanded.\n\nThe high priest first had to make atonement for himself and his household. He wore holy linen garments and brought the required offerings, incense, and blood. The incense cloud covered the mercy seat so that he would not die. The blood was sprinkled before the Lord to cleanse the holy place.\n\nThen Aaron made atonement for the people. Two goats were chosen. One goat was offered to the Lord as a sin offering. The other goat had the sins of Israel confessed over it and was sent into the wilderness, carrying the people’s iniquities away from the camp.\n\nThe sanctuary had to be purified because Israel’s sins defiled the holy place, the tent, and the altar. The rite also covered the priests and the whole assembly. After the work was done, the people were to humble themselves, stop ordinary work, and keep the day as a Sabbath of complete rest. This was a perpetual statute for Israel, to be kept once each year.",

"gods_plan_connection": "This chapter shows how the holy Lord could keep dwelling among Israel without destroying them. It reveals that sin must be dealt with by God’s appointed mediation and cleansing. In the wider Bible, this pattern points forward to the need for a greater priest and fuller atonement, but here the focus is on Israel under the Mosaic covenant.",
"simple_application": "We should approach God with reverence, not presumption. We should not treat sin lightly, because it defiles and separates. We should give thanks that God provided a way for his people to be cleansed and restored. The right response is humility, obedience, and trust in the Lord’s appointed way.",
