NET Bible Text
139:1 O Lord, you examine me and know. 139:2 You know when I sit down and when I get up; even from far away you understand my motives. 139:3 You carefully observe me when I travel or when I lie down to rest; you are aware of everything I do. 139:4 Certainly my tongue does not frame a word without you, O Lord, being thoroughly aware of it. 139:5 You squeeze me in from behind and in front; you place your hand on me. 139:6 Your knowledge is beyond my comprehension; it is so far beyond me, I am unable to fathom it. 139:7 Where can I go to escape your spirit? Where can I flee to escape your presence? 139:8 If I were to ascend to heaven, you would be there. If I were to sprawl out in Sheol, there you would be. 139:9 If I were to fly away on the wings of the dawn, and settle down on the other side of the sea, 139:10 even there your hand would guide me, your right hand would grab hold of me. 139:11 If I were to say, “Certainly the darkness will cover me, and the light will turn to night all around me,” 139:12 even the darkness is not too dark for you to see, and the night is as bright as day; darkness and light are the same to you. 139:13 Certainly you made my mind and heart; you wove me together in my mother’s womb. 139:14 I will give you thanks because your deeds are awesome and amazing. You knew me thoroughly; 139:15 my bones were not hidden from you, when I was made in secret and sewed together in the depths of the earth. 139:16 Your eyes saw me when I was inside the womb. All the days ordained for me were recorded in your scroll before one of them came into existence. 139:17 How difficult it is for me to fathom your thoughts about me, O God! How vast is their sum total! 139:18 If I tried to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand. Even if I finished counting them, I would still have to contend with you. 139:19 If only you would kill the wicked, O God! Get away from me, you violent men! 139:20 They rebel against you and act deceitfully; your enemies lie. 139:21 O Lord, do I not hate those who hate you, and despise those who oppose you? 139:22 I absolutely hate them, they have become my enemies! 139:23 Examine me, and probe my thoughts! Test me, and know my concerns! 139:24 See if there is any idolatrous tendency in me, and lead me in the reliable ancient path! Psalm 140 For the music director; a psalm of David.

Simple Summary
Psalm 139 teaches that the Lord knows every part of a person’s life. He knows words before they are spoken, is present everywhere, formed life in the womb, and has ordained every day. Because of this, the right response is worship, humility, and a prayer for God to search the heart and lead in the right way.
What This Passage Means
This psalm begins and ends with the same truth: the Lord thoroughly knows his servant. He knows sitting down and rising up. He knows movement, rest, and speech before a word is spoken. His knowledge is complete and beyond human grasp.
The psalm then says there is no place to escape God’s presence. Heaven, Sheol, the farthest sea, and even darkness cannot hide a person from him. Darkness is not dark to God.
Next, the psalm turns to God’s work in creating life. The Lord formed the psalmist in the womb. He saw him before birth and had already ordered the days of his life. Human life is not accidental. It is known and governed by God.
This leads to awe and praise. God’s thoughts are too many to count. The proper response is not pride, but reverence.
The final section is more severe. The psalmist speaks against the wicked who rebel against God and act deceitfully. This is not a general command for personal revenge. It is a covenantal cry for God’s justice against those who persist in rebellion. After that, the psalmist turns the prayer back on himself and asks God to search his own heart, expose any idolatrous way, and lead him in the ancient path of faithfulness.
Important Truths
- God knows a person completely, including thoughts, motives, and words before they are spoken.
- No place in creation is outside God’s presence or sight.
- God formed life in the womb and ordained the days of a person’s life before they began.
- God’s thoughts are greater than human ability to count or understand.
- The psalmist responds to God’s holiness with worship, awe, and self-examination.
- The closing words against the wicked are covenantal and tied to rebellion against God, not a general rule for private vengeance.
Warnings, Promises, or Commands
- Warning: no one can hide from the Lord, not in darkness, distance, or death.
- Warning: God sees deceit, rebellion, and idolatry.
- Promise: God is present with his servant everywhere and guides him by his hand.
- Promise: God knew and formed life before birth.
- Command: ask God to search the heart and expose evil.
- Command: seek the reliable ancient path of covenant faithfulness.
How This Fits in God’s Plan
Psalm 139 belongs to Israel’s worship under the covenant God who created, searches, and governs his people. It is not a direct prophecy of Christ, but it fits the Bible’s larger path: God’s perfect knowledge and holy presence show the need for atonement, cleansing, and a righteous king. Later Scripture will reveal these truths more fully in Christ.
Simple Application
Believers should live as people fully known by God. This should produce humility, gratitude, and trust. It should also lead to honest prayer: ask God to examine your heart, uncover sinful desires, and guide you away from evil. Do not try to manage appearances before God. Walk in repentance, faith, and obedience.
