NET Bible Text
97:1 The Lord reigns! Let the earth be happy! Let the many coastlands rejoice! 97:2 Dark clouds surround him; equity and justice are the foundation of his throne. 97:3 Fire goes before him; on every side it burns up his enemies. 97:4 His lightning bolts light up the world; the earth sees and trembles. 97:5 The mountains melt like wax before the Lord, before the Lord of the whole earth. 97:6 The sky declares his justice, and all the nations see his splendor. 97:7 All who worship idols are ashamed, those who boast about worthless idols. All the gods bow down before him. 97:8 Zion hears and rejoices, the towns of Judah are happy, because of your judgments, O Lord. 97:9 For you, O Lord, are the sovereign king over the whole earth; you are elevated high above all gods. 97:10 You who love the Lord, hate evil! He protects the lives of his faithful followers; he delivers them from the power of the wicked. 97:11 The godly bask in the light; the morally upright experience joy. 97:12 You godly ones, rejoice in the Lord! Give thanks to his holy name. Psalm 98 A psalm.

Simple Summary
Psalm 97 declares that the LORD is king over the whole earth. His rule is holy and just. It brings fear to idols and the wicked, but joy, light, protection, and thanks to those who love him and hate evil.
What This Passage Means
The psalm begins with a loud claim: the LORD reigns. Because he is king, the earth and far coastlands are called to rejoice. The psalm then uses storm images such as clouds, fire, lightning, and trembling mountains to show his majesty and power. These are poetic pictures of his holy rule, not plain weather reports. His throne is not based on raw force alone. It is founded on justice and righteousness.
The psalm says that his justice is seen by the nations. God does not rule in secret. His glory is public. That is why idol worship is shamed. Those who trust in worthless idols are exposed as foolish. No rival god can stand before the LORD.
Zion and Judah rejoice when they hear of the LORD’s judgments. For God’s people, his righteous judgment is good news because it means evil will not win. The psalm then calls God’s people to respond rightly: love the LORD and hate evil. Love for God is not separated from moral obedience. The LORD protects his faithful ones and delivers them from the wicked. So the righteous live in light and joy, and they are told to give thanks to his holy name.

How This Fits in God’s Plan
Psalm 97 belongs to the larger biblical witness that the LORD alone is king. It fits the worship life of Israel and points forward to the full display of God’s universal reign. In the wider canon, this theme continues toward the righteous kingdom later revealed in the Messiah.
Simple Application
This psalm teaches believers to worship God with reverence and joy. It also joins praise to obedience: if we love the LORD, we must hate evil. We should not trust idols, admire wickedness, or act as if God’s justice does not matter. Instead, we should thank him, trust his rule, and rest in his protection.
