God Judges Unjust Rulers

Psalms — Psalm 82 PSA_082

NET Bible Text

82:1 God stands in the assembly of El; in the midst of the gods he renders judgment. 82:2 He says, “How long will you make unjust legal decisions and show favoritism to the wicked? (Selah) 82:3 Defend the cause of the poor and the fatherless! Vindicate the oppressed and suffering! 82:4 Rescue the poor and needy! Deliver them from the power of the wicked! 82:5 They neither know nor understand. They stumble around in the dark, while all the foundations of the earth crumble. 82:6 I thought, ‘You are gods; all of you are sons of the Most High.’ 82:7 Yet you will die like mortals; you will fall like all the other rulers.” 82:8 Rise up, O God, and execute judgment on the earth! For you own all the nations. Psalm 83 A song, a psalm of Asaph.

Simple Summary

Psalm 82 shows God standing in judgment over rulers who have used power badly. He charges them with unfair decisions, neglect of the poor, fatherless, oppressed, and needy, and then says they will die like other people. The psalm ends by asking God to rise up and judge the whole earth, since all nations belong to him.

What This Passage Means

This psalm is a courtroom scene. God is the Judge, and the rulers or authorities are on trial before him. He asks how long they will keep making unjust decisions and favoring the wicked. He commands them to defend the poor, help the fatherless, vindicate the oppressed, and rescue the needy. Their sin is not only social failure. It is a failure to do the justice God requires.

The psalm says they do not know or understand. Because of their darkness, the foundations of society begin to shake. Injustice at the top brings damage everywhere. God then says that although they have held a high place, they are still mortal. They will die like ordinary people and fall like other rulers. Privilege does not keep anyone safe from God’s judgment.

The psalm ends with a plea for God to rise up and judge the earth, because all nations belong to him. That means God’s rule is over every nation, not only Israel. The psalm teaches that all delegated authority is accountable to God.

How This Fits in God’s Plan

Psalm 82 belongs to Israel's covenant life and shows that the Lord who gave his law also judges its violation. It widens the view from Israel’s courts to God’s rule over all nations. In the wider biblical story, it exposes the failure of fallen human authority and points to the need for God's righteous King to rule over the whole earth.

Simple Application

People in authority must remember that God sees how they use power. Parents, leaders, judges, pastors, and rulers should not show favoritism or ignore the weak. God’s people should care for the vulnerable as part of obedience to him. When human systems fail, believers can still trust that God rules and will judge in righteousness.
