God Alone Is My Refuge

Psalms — Psalm 62 PSA_062

NET Bible Text

62:1 For God alone I patiently wait; he is the one who delivers me. 62:2 He alone is my protector and deliverer. He is my refuge; I will not be upended. 62:3 How long will you threaten a man? All of you are murderers, as dangerous as a leaning wall or an unstable fence. 62:4 They spend all their time planning how to bring him down. They love to use deceit; they pronounce blessings with their mouths, but inwardly they utter curses. (Selah) 62:5 Patiently wait for God alone, my soul! For he is the one who gives me confidence. 62:6 He alone is my protector and deliverer. He is my refuge; I will not be upended. 62:7 God delivers me and exalts me; God is my strong protector and my shelter. 62:8 Trust in him at all times, you people! Pour out your hearts before him! God is our shelter! (Selah) 62:9 Men are nothing but a mere breath; human beings are unreliable. When they are weighed in the scales, all of them together are lighter than air. 62:10 Do not trust in what you can gain by oppression! Do not put false confidence in what you can gain by robbery! If wealth increases, do not become attached to it! 62:11 God has declared one principle; two principles I have heard: God is strong, 62:12 and you, O Lord, demonstrate loyal love. For you repay men for what they do. Psalm 63 A psalm of David, written when he was in the Judean wilderness.

Simple Summary

Psalm 62 teaches that God alone is a safe refuge and deliverer. People, deceit, oppression, and wealth are unstable and cannot bear our trust. The faithful should wait for God, pour out their hearts to him, and rest in his power, loyal love, and justice.

What This Passage Means

Psalm 62 begins and ends with the same confession: God alone is the psalmist’s refuge, protector, and deliverer. The writer is under real pressure from enemies who threaten, lie, and hide evil intentions behind friendly words. Even so, the psalmist tells his own soul to wait for God and not to fear what people can do.

The psalm then widens to all God’s people. They are called to trust in God at all times and to pour out their hearts before him. That means honest prayer, not hiding fear or pretending to be strong on our own. The reason is simple: human beings are like a breath. They are fragile and unreliable. Wealth is also not a safe place to rest, especially if it comes through oppression or robbery.

The closing verses give the foundation for this trust. God is strong. He also shows loyal love. He sees what people do and repays each person rightly. So the psalm teaches patient faith, honest prayer, and refusal to build life on deceit or unjust gain.

Important Truths

  • God alone is the psalmist’s refuge, protector, and deliverer.
  • Waiting on God is active trust, not despair.
  • Enemies may use deceit and even outward blessing while planning harm.
  • God’s people should pour out their hearts before him in honest prayer.
  • Human beings are unstable and cannot bear ultimate trust.
  • Do not trust oppression, robbery, or wealth as your security.
  • God is strong, loyal in love, and just in repayment.

Warnings, Promises, or Commands

  • Wait for God alone.
  • Trust in him at all times.
  • Pour out your hearts before him.
  • Do not trust oppression.
  • Do not trust robbery.
  • Do not become attached to wealth.
  • God repays people for what they do.

How This Fits in God’s Plan

In Israel’s covenant life, this psalm teaches trust in the Lord rather than in human power. In the wider canon, it belongs to Scripture’s repeated call for God’s people to rely on his refuge, deliverance, loyal love, and justice.

Simple Application

When fear rises, wait for God and trust him. Pray openly instead of hiding your fears. Do not build your life on manipulation, violence, or money. Keep trusting God’s power, loyal love, and justice when people seem unstable.
