Walk the path of wisdom, not the path of evil

4:10 Listen, my child, and accept my words, so that the years of your life will be many. 4:11 I will guide you in the way of wisdom and I will lead you in upright paths. 4:12 When you walk, your steps will not be hampered, and when you run, you will not stumble. 4:13 Hold on to instruction, do not let it go; protect it, because it is your life. 4:14 Do not enter the path of the wicked or walk in the way of those who are evil. 4:15 Avoid it, do not go on it; turn away from it, and go on. 4:16 For they cannot sleep unless they cause harm; they are robbed of sleep until they make someone stumble. 4:17 For they eat bread gained from wickedness and drink wine obtained from violence. 4:18 But the path of the righteous is like the bright morning light, growing brighter and brighter until full day. 4:19 The way of the wicked is like gloomy darkness; they do not know what causes them to stumble.

Proverbs 4:10-19 calls the hearer to receive wisdom, hold fast to instruction, and stay far from the way of the wicked. Wisdom gives life, steadiness, and growing light. Evil leads to harm, darkness, and stumbling.

A father speaks to his child and urges him to listen carefully. If he accepts these words, his life will be helped and lengthened in a general, proverb-like way. Wisdom guides a person in upright paths. It keeps the feet from stumbling and gives stability for the whole of life.

The command is not only to learn wisdom, but to hold on to it. Instruction must be guarded, because it is life itself. The warning is strong: do not step onto the path of the wicked. Do not walk with them. Do not even begin that road. Turn away and keep moving.

Why? Because the wicked are driven by harm. They are restless until they do evil. Their life is fed by violence and wrongdoing. The passage uses vivid language to show how sin becomes a settled way of life.

The end of the matter is clear. The path of the righteous is like the morning light, growing brighter until full day. The way of the wicked is like deep darkness. They stumble, and they do not even know what caused it. Wisdom leads toward clarity and life. Wickedness leads toward blindness and ruin.

This passage fits the Bible’s larger pattern that God orders life morally. Wisdom tends toward life, steadiness, and light. Wickedness tends toward harm, blindness, and death. It also fits the wider biblical theme of two ways: the way of righteousness and the way of evil.

Do not treat sin as a small thing or assume you can safely stand near it. Listen to wise instruction. Keep away from places, habits, and relationships that pull you toward evil. Choose the path that leads to light, clarity, and life.
